The Battle of Okinawa (May 1945) has been referred to as the "Typhoon of Steel" in English, and tetsu no ame ("rain of steel")  in Japanese. The nicknames refer to the ferocity of the fighting, the intensity of kamikaze suicide attacks from the Japanese defenders, and to the sheer numbers of Allied ships and armored vehicles that assaulted the island. The battle resulted in the highest number of casualties in the Pacific during World War II. Japan lost over 100,000 troops killed or captured, and the Allies suffered more than 50,000 casualties of all kinds. Simultaneously, tens of thousands of local civilians were killed, wounded, or committed suicide.

  Watched the great film Jesus Christ Superstar on TV - poor Jesus, it must have been bloody awful for him...I´m not sure I would have the guts to do it myself...  great music though. I left the room before the tormentors and the flogging started, I can´t stand watching torturing and pain - this goes for man as well as for animals.

  Tantalos var en grekisk kung som fick sona ett gruvligt brott i underjorden. Där står han ännu, plågad av hunger och törst, med vatten till hakan som ständigt viker undan när han försöker dricka det och med läckra frukter på grenarna ovanför huvudet som ständigt viker undan när han försöker ta dem.

Det svenska uttrycket ”att lida tantali kval” kommer från den grekiska sagan och betyder att plågads av ständiga besvikelser; inte som det felaktigt nyttjas - inför en imponerad och okritisk krets? - att beskriva kval i största allmänhet. Visst blir man besviken på folk...

Oskicket att svänga sig med uttryck som ska antyda en klassisk bildning faller alldeles på marken när ifrågavarande bon mots hamnar i fel sällskap...
